What the Energy Drink Companies Aren’t Telling You

By 2017 the NY Times reports that energy drink companies will be making $21.5 billion. That, despite increased publicity on the health risks of consuming traditional energy drinks. It’s no surprise that that with an industry that big, there are some things most consumers don’t know about the products.

Budge Collinson, President of Infusion Sciences and developer of Youth Infusion, is not a fan of energy drinks. “Energy drinks will ultimately give someone a short high with a long and deep low,” Collinson says. He also says the stimulants are stressing the adrenal glands, which lead to blood sugar crashes and midday energy slumps.
Energy drinks that contain sugar may contribute to weight gain — and too much caffeine, or caffeine-like substances, can lead to:

1. Nervousness – Some people are advised to stay away from caffeine as much as possible, usually those with heart conditions. This is because caffeine is a stimulant drug – it speeds up activity in the nervous system, leading to increased anxiousness and nervousness.

2. Irritability – What goes up must come down. This is the philosophy behind the sugar rush you get from energy drinks. Sure, energy drinks will wake you up, but it will also cause you to experience a “crash” soon afterward, becoming drowsy and irritable.

3. Insomnia – From increasing activity in the nervous system, the caffeine in energy drinks may make it impossible to fall asleep at night. This ultimately leads to you feeling drowsy, irritable and unable to think clearly the next day.

4. Rapid heartbeat – Another reason heart patients are advised to say away from energy drinks and caffeine. The drug can cause irregular and rapid heartbeats in some individuals, mimicking the effects of an anxiety attack.

5. Increased blood pressure – Those with hypertension (high blood pressure) should avoid energy drinks at all costs. However, the chemicals and caffeine in energy drinks could cause hypertension in individuals who have never had the condition before.
